Münzkabinett. (Engl.: Coin Cabinet). Term in use since Renaissance, traditionally to describe important collections, esp. national or royal & university or museum (e.g., Münzkabinett, Staatliche Museen in Berlin; Cabinet des Médailles, est. by Louis XIV, in Paris; in Oslo and Copenhagen, Kongelige Myntcabinet; and, Gabinetto Numismatico, Vatican libraries). Since the 19th cent. sellers have also adopted it (e.g., Kölner Münzkabinett, Cologne; “the HJB [Berk] Cabinet,” Chicago).
