Roman Imperial. Valerian I (253-260 CE) AR Antoninianus (2.76g, 21.5mm, 6h). Struck in Viminacium, 3rd emission, 257 CE.
Obverse: IMP VALERIANVS P F AVG. Radiate and draped bust right.
Reverse: VICT PART. Victory standing left, holding palm in left hand, resting her right on shield; to left, Parthian captive (Parthia, herself?) seated left, in attitude of mourning.
References: Göbl MIR 36, 847d. See also: RIC V 262 var. (draped bust); RSC 255 var. (same).
Provenance: Ex-Gitbud & Naumann (eBay Store), 19 March 2013.
Numis. Notes: Dark toning/find patina. Rare. Perhaps 2-3 others in ACSearch of this particular variety: draped bust/”PART” (i.e., RIC 626 type). Of the broader type: Between 2000 and 2023 (last I checked), only 7 exs. (12 records, 5 duplicates) in ACSearch — counting both obv. variants (draped, as here, RIC 626, and cuirassed, as in my other example of type MIR 36, 847d) and both rev. variants (PART and PARTI, the latter not represented in this collection). See also the Emmett Collection (Beasley cat.) spec. & Esty Collection spec. (superb one!) for the cuirassed var. w/out drapery.
