Prov: Ex Naville 62 (12 Dec 2020), 38 (“From the Lord Grantley collections,” additional provenance not noted).
Prior collection history:
– Cornelius Vermeule (1925-2008) Collection, sold for the benefit of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts [Triton III (30 Nov 1999), probably Lot 1655 (part)];
– Richard Cyril Lockett (1873-1950) Collection w/ tray tag written in his own hand [Glendining, Part II: Greek I (25 Oct 1955), Lot 981 (part of 8)];
– “Lord Grantley,” John Richard-Brinsley Norton (1855-1943), 5th Baron of Grantley [Glendining, Part VI (29 Jun 1944), Lot 2251 (part of 44; possibly 2252, part of 59)];
– S. Mavrojani (1866-1930) Collection [Sotheby 9 Mar 1936, Lot 141 (part of 29 AE, 7 “Pyrrhus in Sicily,” bought by Baldwin for 4 pounds, 10 shillings), noted in Lockett’s purchase notebooks (Greek 12 AE Sicily)]
Note: The ticket accompanying the coin is in the hand of R.C. Lockett.
His notebook records only “Mavrojani sale” as provenance. He acquired almost all his Mavrojani coins from the Grantley sales. In many cases he recorded only Mavrojani in his notebook, with Grantley implied.
